How do I turn on cheats?

I haven't been on here for a long time and i'm so confused. I have my own server and when I press esc on my pc it doesn't allow me to turn on lan/turn on cheats. I saw some people saying to do /op (user) but i doesn't let me do that cheat. I hope you can help me quickly. Thank you!

Go to your server console and type /op (Player). You might be doing it from the actual server chat which wont work.

You can find the server console under the Appearance tab on the panel. It should be a box that says "Server Commands". Type the command there.
