how do i stop people from joining my minecraft server

i want to play on my server with just me and my friend but people keep joining how do i stop this.

You can whitelist your server so only people you want can join. First do /whitelist on. This will turn on the whitelist.  Then /whitelist add <player> and add you and your friends names. Then only people added to the whitelist can join.

i whitelisted but people are still joining the server

First you need to op yourself. On the server console, type /op <player> and then you will get perms. The console can be found under the appearance tab on the panel and should say "Server Commands". After typing the command there, click send.
