Experiencing Lag

Hello.

 

I am new to all of this, and wanted to evaluate Minehut to see if it would be the best fit for me to host a casual MP minecraft server for my friends. I'm fond of the easy interface and setup, but I'm experiencing frequent lag spikes while playing.

Admittedly, I'm playing on a Free server (to try it out) so I wanted to ask: are these lag spikes typical of free servers, or do other servers experience them as well?

Lag spikes can happen more many reasons. Do you have a lot of plugins running that is doing a lot of things? Are there a a lot of chunks being loaded or entities nearby? It can also sometimes just be client side lag instead of server lag. Try doing this to see what might be causing the lag.

Thank you for this reply. The server is brand new; I just spun it up today, a few hours ago. No plugins, nothing fancy. Myself and a friend, on separate networks, both experienced the lag spikes simultaneously, meaning it is not likely client side.

I will try the timings command and report back any findings.

The timings command was not recognized. I checked the source URL in the screenshot and it did not provide much guidance as to why it might not be working for me. Seems it's not a stock minecraft command?

Did it not do anything when you did /timings on on your server?

Oh. You need to op yourself first. In the server console, type /op (your name) and it will give you perms to that command. You can find the console in the appearance tab on the panel. It should say something like "Server Commands". Then you should be able to do the command.

Did you ever change the tick speed of your server? If not, just ignore that question. I see a lot of chunk loading things. Are there a lot of people loading chunks or have a lot of entities? That could be the reason.

I wouldn't even know how to change the tick speed.

The data you are seeing is me mining a square of blocks in a 20x20 area for about 3-5 minutes. I was alone on the server.

Really not sure then. Do /tps, what comes up when you do that? do it during a lagspike and see what it says. Also do you have Discord?
