Play 1.17 in 1.16.5

I have a server with a friend whose 1.17 doesn't work but for the rest of us it does. Is there a way for me to upgrade my server finally to 1.17 but for it to still be playable in 1.16.5? I'm aware of the ProtocolSupport plugin but the info is outdated so I'm very hesitant to add it.

You can change your server version by going to Appearance then Server Version and choose 1.17. You will need to restart for the server to be updated.

Yes, I know this, but is it possible for another player to play on this 1.17 server on 1.16.5, maybe with a specific plugin?
