Extreme Lag

Recently my friends and I made a new server and have been playing on it for a couple days now and have made a lot of progress, but now we are experiencing a lot of lag. Whenever we try to break a block, it just appears there again and doesn't break, and when we try to interact with stuff like using a crafting table, furnace, etc, it takes a few seconds 5-10 for it to do anything. I have tried fixing the lag by killing all mobs, animals, entities, destroying spawners, and destroying other things in hope of solving the lag, but have not found any solutions for the lag yet. I really would appreciate some assistance to help solve this lag or at least make it playable.
