Stop random people

Over the night random people joined my server and destroyed EVERYTHING. And now im kinda pi**ed bc I don't understand why anybody should do that and me and my friends spend a lot of time in this world. But however is there a way to stop people I don't know from joining my world or another way to prevent such a situation. Please help me

This my sound stupid but how do i add a wait list?

I think, that ther is an option in the server menu, were it says: Server Visibility. Turn this on "not visible" to stop random people joining. Or just add a whitelist.
