Is there a way to take something from when someone types in chat, cancel event, and set it to a variable?

This is my skript: format slot 20 of player with book named "Hatespeech" with lore "&7Mute Duration: &e30 days" to run [make player execute command "tempmutegui %arg% Hatespeech 30d"] But when i do it from the gui, it does not work. When I do the command myself, it works. Any ideas why?
